How to find files on your Mac using Spotlight and other third-party solutions

December 13: HOLIDAY CELEBRATION and APPLE TRIVIA CONTEST:
President John Connor has put together 2 rounds of 11 questions concerning Apple trivia. You may work individually or in groups up to four people. Anyone is welcome to play, so bring along a friend! Come have fun and test your Apple knowledge!
The winning team will receive four $25 iTunes gift cards and the second place team will get four $15 iTunes gift cards. (It’s up to the winning groups on how to divide the prizes)
Additionally, there are attendance prizes and treats (Each officer is bringing a dozen cookies.) and regular and decaf coffee will be served.

November 8: EVERYTHING iCLOUD
What can iCloud do for you? What are its benefits and what are its issues? What do you have to do to use it? Don Benne will talk about iCloud and we hope to be able to demonstrate at least some of its abilities and uses.

October 11:
LION, iOS5 and the new iPHONE 4S
Jay Kappmeier opens with a discussion of Lion. Members are invited to come with questions and issues to discuss concerning the new Mac OS. Ron Mueller talks about iOS5 which becomes available the next day and what benefits you can expect on your mobile devices. A brief overview of the new iPhone 4S caps the evening.

September 13: STREAMING TV :  Streaming TV video
Possible alternatives to cable and satellite TV.  What are the advantages of and is there a downside to cutting that cable cord? Don Benne will demonstrate how to turn a Mac into a DVR. He will bring several pieces of equipment and show us ways to set up our own system.


August 9: BACKUP PLANS :  Update
Always important, and now more than ever as you consider upgrading to Lion OS 10.7. We will explore using such things as Time Machine and Retrospect that allow restoration of differing versions of files. We will also discuss cloning using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper; and cloud backups with software such as DropBox and Crashplan. We will investigate what is safe, and how safe it really is.  We encourage members to share their backup strategies and stories concerning backup. Finally, if time allows, we will also invite users to twist the Lion's tail.

July 12: OS X Lion:
There is a new cat in town, OSX 10.7 Lion. Don Benne will demo the new OS and all the exciting changes it entails at tonight’s meeting. Come find out if you should upgrade and what it will take, or whether you should wait. Lion brings some very new elements to the Mac OS, so come find out what all the roaring is about!

June 14: NEW APPLE PRODUCTS :
Apple showed three major updates at this month’s WWDC presentation. Don Benne will take us through the new Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) which will be released in July, the new iOS5 and the iCloud. Come see and hear what these new releases will mean for you and your Mac and iOS devices.

May 10: SHARING FAVORITE iOS APPS, MAC APP STORE and ELECTIONS :
For our main topic, we ask members to bring their favorite iPhone, iPad Touch, and iPad apps to show and tell tonight. We hope this will give us all ideas about exciting and useful new apps for our mobile devices. Don Benne will briefly speak about the Mac App Store and its implications for software development and distribution. We will also have officers’ elections this evening.

April 12: GOING PAPERLESS & STEVE JOBS:

Jay Kappmeier will demonstrate how to use a document scanner to digitally archive important paper documents, such as receipts, tax forms, etc. He will discuss what must be kept on paper and what you can scan and get rid of, and how searchable PDFs can be made of those documents, so your important papers will become much more accessable. We will also show the Steve Jobs video from the Bloomberg Game Changer Series. It is a fascinating look into the man and the ideas behind the products we prefer to use.

March 8: The NEW iPAD 2 and OFFICE 11:
We will have a brief presentation and discussion on the newly announced iPad 2 and updated MacBooks. Then Jay Kappmeier will demonstrate Microsoft OFFICE 11 for Mac, which brings the ribbon interface to the Mac version. He will also discuss issues surrounding Outlook integration.


February 8:
The new APPLE TV and the MAC APP STORE:
Simon Amies will demonstrate the new Apple TV and Air Play which allows iPads and other iOS 4.2 devices to stream video to TVs with HDMI connectors. We also will have a brief discussion of the new Mac App Store which debuts Jan. 6, and what that will mean for Mac users.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Apple TV that Simon uses for the demo will be given away as a members-only attendance prize at the end of the evening.

January 11: Cancelled due to snow

December 14: Christmas Party and annual Trivia contest:
Officers will provide coffee and decorations/door prizes. Officers will also bring snacks to share, but members are encouraged to bring snacks as well. Hanne will supply table decorations to be awarded as door prizes.

November 9: FIRST LOOK — iLIFE 11,  and in particular iPHOTO 9:
Jay Kappmeier will give us an initial look at iPhoto 9 which is part of the newly announced iLife ‘11 suite.

Raffle ticket sales will continue at this month’s meeting. Tickets are $2 each for a chance to win a 16 GB Wi-Fi iPad. The winner will be drawn at the December general meeting. You don’t need to be a member to buy a ticket, but you will need to be a current paid member to win.

October 12: Creating websites, comparing RapidWeaver and iWeb

September 14 : NEW APPLE PRODUCTS, KEYNOTE:
We will start the evening with Don Benne giving us an overview of the just announced new iPods and Apple TV. He will also briefly describe the changes in the iOS 4.1 release and the upcoming 4.2. Then, Lloyd Klinedinst will show the new iPad camera connection kit. Finally, Ron Mueller will demonstrate how you can create presentations in Keynote (part of the iWork suite) and what other uses you may find for this versatile piece of Apple software.

August 10 : NEW APPLE PRODUCTS, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, KEYNOTE:
We plan an eclectic mixture of items for this evening. Apple has announced some new products, specifically the new Magic Trackpad and an Apple Battery Charger. Those items will be demoed along with a Bluetooth barcode scanner. Then, we hope to discuss the advantages of IMAP vs POP accounts for email. Finally, we begin a three part demo of iWork modules, starting tonight with Keynote.

July 13: iPad Apps
Thinking about getting an iPad? Want to know what all the fuss is about? This month Don Benne and other iPad owners will show what they
do with their iPads and which apps they find most useful. Simon Amies will also give a quick overview of the new iPhone 4 and the iOS.

iPAD RAFFLE : We will conclude the selling of raffle tickets ($2 per ticket) for an iPad to be won at this month’s meeting. You must be a current paid GAMUG member to win the raffle (although anyone can buy a ticket). The winner will be chosen at the end of this month’s general meeting.

April 13: ALTERNATIVE OFFICE APPLICATIONS
iWork, Google docs, and open source apps such as Open Office and Neo Office. Discussion to include Address Book and free or inexpensive drawing or graphics apps that will convert MacDraw and Appleworks graphics.

March 9: CONVERTING APPLEWORKS FILES and the NEW APPLE iPAD
This month’s meeting will begin with Don Benne who will briefly discuss Apple’s newest device - the iPad.
Also, since AppleWorks is a non-supported program, it is time to convert what you have and move on to newer applications. Ron Mueller will demonstrate how (or even if it’s possible) to convert AppleWorks files to current, supported applications. This will include the word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and database files in AppleWorks format using apps such as Word, Pages, Numbers, etc.
