The Macintosh Plus (released in January 1986 for \(\$2,600\)) is a historic, all-in-one compact Mac. It famously introduced user-upgradable RAM (via SIMMs) and a SCSI port for external hard drives. It features an 8 MHz processor, 1 MB of RAM, and an 800K floppy drive. [1, 2, 3]

🛠️ Key Technical Specifications
  • Processor: Motorola 68000 running at 8 MHz
  • Memory: 1 MB (expandable to 4 MB via four 30-pin SIMM slots)
  • Display: Built-in 9-inch, 1-bit monochrome screen (\(512 \times 342\) resolution)
  • Storage: One internal 3.5-inch 800K floppy drive
  • Colors: Originally released in Apple beige; updated to platinum gray in 1987 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

🔌 Ports & Peripherals
  • SCSI (DB-25): The first Mac to feature a SCSI bus, allowing the connection of external hard drives and scanners
  • Serial: Two DE-9 serial ports for printers and modems
  • Floppy Port: One DB-19 port for an external floppy drive
  • Keyboard/Mouse: Used an RJ11 keyboard port and a DB9 mouse port [1, 2, 3]

💡 Notable Legacy
The Mac Plus replaced the restrictive, non-expandable limits of the original 128K and 512K Macs. It was one of the most beloved vintage Macs, capable of running Mac OS System 3.0 up to 7.5.5. Due to a lack of an internal cooling fan (a design directive from Steve Jobs to keep the machine perfectly quiet), it utilizes passive convection cooling and relies on side/top vents. [1, 2, 3, 4]
